I don't usually like to watch TV, even though I've been watching an inordinate amount lately. Sometimes someone recommends a show to me, and I think it's amazing. Other shows I've been watching for years. I highly recommend these shows after the jump.
Firefly - I want you to think of an old wild west type shows, detailing the adventures of a small group of people who are just trying to get by, performing any job that will pay, legal or otherwise. Now imagine this small group of people lives in a spaceship and traverses their solar system. The show follows Captain Malcolm Reynolds and the rest of the crew of Serenity (the name of the ship) through their misadventures. I loved this show, despite it only being alive for fourteen 45 minute long episodes. It showed up on Fox for only one season and was then canceled in 2003, but it had such a die-hard following, that after a lot of bitching and groaning, they made it into a movie, called Serenity. The show has something for everyone, comedy comes from it's very witty dialogue and awkward situations, action comes from the wild west style gunfights, suspense, romance, tragedy, and glamor. The worst part about the show is that it ended so soon, especially because some of the characters have mysterious back stories that didn't have time to be explained in the show. If you look online, however, you can find them. The music is all custom for the show, as well. You can watch previews and a few episodes on here.
The Big Bang Theory - One of the best new shows I've seen on TV in recent times. The Big Bang Theory follows a group of four genius scientists (Sheldon, Leonard, Howard, Raj) and the hot, but kind of ditzy, neighbor, Penny. It's hard to explain exactly what you would take away from the show, but it's a very funny show, with plenty of nerdy jokes, and situational humor. Even if you don't have a strong background in science or nerd culture, you'll be sure to have a laugh. CBS finally has some full episodes on the website, which you can find here. Although it's recommended that you start watching from season 1 episode 1, if you can find them.
The IT Crowd - The IT Crowd shares a few similarities with The Big Bang Theory. It's essentially a show about two IT professionals (Roy and Moss) working with a business woman (Jen) and a company that knows extremely little about the magic that is computers. Very very funny, the humor is a little more tech based, but thoroughly enjoyable. One of my favorite clips here. If you're resourceful, you can find full episodes somewhere. Oh, it comes from the Brits, and they had Monty Python. They considered an American version, but I don't know the details on that.
House - House is a show about a genius doctor. Ugh, a medical drama, right? This one has a special kind of appeal, though. The title character, Gregory House played by Hugh Laurie, is an extremely sarcastic and sadistic character, constantly attacking his colleagues passive aggressively and battling a crippling addiction as well as a crippling injury. The show usually features a person with a strange condition which would lead to severe incapacitation or death, but House always come back with a proper diagnosis and solves the problem. Sounds generic, but that's not usually why I watch. Best medical show since Scrubs, in my opinion. Season 7 featured on Hulu here.
If you know of any other shows that you might recommend, feel free to leave it in the comments, or send me a message.
